Aside form the obvious advertising potencial, here is another way Twitter may gain revenue - they project beginning some revenue generating plan by April of this year...

Another idea is to charge companies for corporate accounts that offer extra tools to connect with customers and to monitor what people are saying about products, the good and the bad. Indeed, Ross said, Twitter might be more valuable to companies as a place to listen, rather than talk.

In typical startup fashion, its founders have focused on adding users and fixing what until recently was a notoriously crash-prone service.

Kinda like today, the site has been down all morning and is still down as of 2pm. No fail whale this time though. Me thinks this downtime is more serious.

yeh, noticed that - it's sporatically down (my crackberry beeps VERY loudly when TinyTweet update fails due to server being down); my biggest concern is investing time into what is now a cool and personal service only to get turned off once they start bombarding with advertisements... seems like they're aware of it, time will tell :)
